D002- Parenting Early Childhood During COVID -19
26th June 2020
Novel Corona Virus has taken us all by surprise. The sudden unexpected change has bought many shifts in our lives which many of us are finding difficult to navigate.
The first and foremost priority in this situation is to
keep oneself calm and centered. Your first responsibility
is to be a warrior and stand tall ad mist this crisis. Children rely on their
parents for safety and emotional support. It’s your duty as a parent to
reassure your children that you are with them and the family will get through
this COVID together.
Children may have lots of questions about Pandemic.
Answer their questions very honestly. It is ok to say that people are getting
sick because of the virus but if we follow simple rules like washing hands frequently
and stay home the family will stay healthy.
During Pandemic, keep healthy routines and plan the
day in such a way that the benefits from the routine that are predictable yet
flexible enough to meet individual needs.
Engage yourself with your child in some fun activity,
reading books, engaging him in household chores where he feels engaged and
happy.
Younger children are more anxious and worried during
the Pandemic and may not have words to describe their feelings. In such a situation they may sometimes misbehave out of boredom. As parents, we have to
find something else for them to do.
Some rewards can be used to reinforce good behavior.
Children who receive positive reinforcement for their good work are motivated
to keep working hard. So, it’s important to reward the behavior that we want to see more often, rather than focusing on their negative actions.
Physical punishment should be avoided. Spanking,
hitting the children isn’t effective. It can increase aggression in children
over time. Understand that they are also feeling the change and might be unable to
express it in words. Take time to see the world through their eyes. Words have
power, use them judiciously. Don’t discuss news and stat too much in front of
younger kids. Spread love and share joyous time together.
