B001- Changing the paradigm of Education in the region by Mr. S P Das, Director/Principal, Delhi World Public School Siliguri

21st June 2020

It might sound outrageous to state that today education system kills creativity and today's schools are criminally boring places for our kids.

In most parts of our Country, we still follow the one-size-fits-all way of teaching- almost the factory style of education, barring a few progressive schools that are really driving in some changes in the teaching-learning process. Our kids today are living through the most information-rich age in history. They are bombarded with information through the T.V and the internet.

They are in a way hyper-stimulated and unfortunately our response is to punish them for getting distracted from boring stuff in school.

Education in our country and more so in this part of West Bengal is about compliance and conformity and strict adherence to standardized curricula and standard testing, which need to change if we really are to prepare our children for the unforeseen future.

We have a mindset that has been passed on for generations and that requires revisiting. We have failed to keep our children engaged and empowered and expose them to experimental and discovery-based learning.

Here at Delhi World Public School, Siliguri which is an upcoming modern highly progressive public school, we are focused on bringing in a learning revolution.

Teaching has triumphed so far in all most all schools in our country and also the world over, while real learning has been a casualty. This being the real reason why our students have failed to make the mark where they needed to.

For real learning to take place what we need now is no reforms in our system because that would only amount to simply improving a broken model. What we need is not an evolution but a revolution. It means to innovate fundamentally in education. It means doing something that people don’t find very easy for the most part because of their fixed mindsets.

We need to educate our parents and educators with the thought that life is not linear. It is organic. That human talent is tremendously diverse.

We have to move from what is a factory model, of education to a model that is based on principles of agriculture.

We have to educate our parents that human development and flourishing is not a mechanical process. It is an organic process and that one cannot predict the outcome of human development.

All one can do like a farmer, is to create the condition under which they will begin to flourish. Thus the need of the present for the future is a studied and systematic shift in the present educational model, preceded by a shift in attitude among educators and parents which would lead to creating a learning environment where children would be made to experience rather than to cram up concepts. Exposure to the right stimuli outside their classroom would expose kids to experiential learning and much more.

Our faculty at Delhi World Public School, Siliguri is well-groomed for this inevitable change.
